School farmers markets - Organic Centre Wales

School farmers market at Valley Primary School, Anglesey

This project started with a workshop at the school on 2 November 2010. Staff from the Mid Wales Food and Land Trust gave the pupils were shown a presentation about farmers markets and led a discussion. The children came up with creative ideas for publicizing the market, communicating with customers, producing their own items for sale, managing the finances and reviewing success. You are going to organize a farmers market

A further meeting was held on 19 November to plan the event in more detail, and the school was given a banner and leaflets to advertise the event.
The market was held after school on Monday 13 December. There were 12 producer stalls, selling meat, cakes, flowers, vegetables, Christmas trees, gifts, cards and hampers. The school had its own stall selling fruit crumbles, biscuits, tree decorations and Christmas marmalade, and every class made something to sell. There was also a cafe area with hot and cold drinks, Father Christmas in his grotto, music, a raffle and even a snow machine.

The following July, pupils from the school visited Gwêl Enlli, a nearby organic farm. There Dr Wil Roberts and Dr Diana Roberts, the farmers, showed them how wide variety of grasses, plants and flowers thrive on the farm, and how these provide a varied diet for the Welsh Black cows and also source of food for many insects, including mayflies, dragonflies and butterflies. They also found water voles and frogs, and saw trees which had been planted.
